Hello everyone! I realized its about time to write my first post. Please pardon if my blog looks a bit rough, I’ve never made a website before! I guess that is the first thing you’ll learn about me. Here’s some more!
My name is Natalia and it is so nice to meet you. I am a senior in college working on my Bachelors in Biological Sciences. My goal with this degree is to become a physician…though I am still not sure what I will specialize in. As you may or may not have concluded from the name of this blog, I am diabetic. Type 1 Diabetic to be exact! I was diagnosed when I was six years old after causing too many interruptions when asking to go to the bathroom in my first grade class (probably about 10 times in an hour). If you know about Type 1 Diabetes, some of the symptoms include frequent urination, extreme thirst, and unexplained weight loss. As a skinny, frail six year old, I started showing all of these symptoms about half way through my first year of elementary school. I remember crying and pleading not to be dropped off on my first day. As time would prove, that classroom decorated with the map of the world and various flags, the crayon marks on the floor, and the sweet teacher with glasses and silver hair, would be witness to the year my life changed. Looking back now, I remember being so confused. I went from going to birthday parties at the American Girl Doll cafe without a care in the world, to now having to worry about how many carbs were in the sandwich I wanted to eat. Of course, being so young, my parents did most of the calculations and carb counting for me. I was simply the pin cushion. I became a spectacle in my classrooms throughout the school year. My school nurse, Lisa, would come to my class at certain times throughout the day to prick my finger, check my blood sugar, and give me insulin or glucose tablets as needed. Although I was so young and scared, feeling every high and every low as if something was wrong with me, I had an amazing support system within my family, and for that, I am blessed. In my next post, I’ll go more in depth as to how kids my age tried understanding why their friend had to go to the hospital for 2 weeks and came back with insulin pens and a new nurse friend.
Thank you for reading! I hope this was a nice little introduction to my blog! I look forward to sharing more about my journey.
